Our Story

Like many Arizonans we had limited success with our backyard gardens even with regularly buying the recommended chemical fertilizers and trying to adjust the soil balance for our plants. We did get some fruits and vegetables, but also knew there must be a better way.

Then we heard about using worms to help our plants thrive while composting our food scraps in an odor-free way. We were skeptical, but decided to give it a try in two of our gardens.  The results were amazing!  Even with brutal weather and inconsistent attention from us, we had our most bountiful harvests ever. 

We were sure the worms were the key factor because the plants without worms were mediocre just like previous years. As we researched the issue further, we learned how the worms improved the soil condition and provided the microorganism-filled castings that helped our plants thrive.

Our next step was to start our own vermicomposting (process for creating worm castings) bin and acquire more worms.  We stumbled through misinformation, conflicting advice and non-Arizona specific approaches. We confronted the logistic barriers that existed and realized most people had not understood the advantages of worm castings.

Wanting to help the people in our community grow better gardens and divert food scraps from landfills, we founded Home Garden Worms. Our focus is to make locally produced worm castings available, develop a complete in-garden composting kit including worms and provide home consulting to help folks find their best solution.

We regularly have booths at local farmer's markets and other events.
