In-Garden Worm Composting Kit

Complete Kit to Provide the Freshest Worm Castings to Your Plants

A wonderful way to get fresh worm castings to your plants is to have an in-garden worm composting kit. This allows you to effectively use household food scraps to create an odor-free soil amendment and help your garden thrive. Our complete worm composting kit includes everything you need to get started including red wiggler worms, premium soil starter base, supplies, worm chow, detailed instructions, and more.

With in-garden worm composting, the worms live directly with plants. Regularly a combination of household compostable materials are put in the worm bedding area of the garden.  Moisture and temperature levels typically match the plant needs.  As the worms move throughout the garden, they naturally distribute most of the castings saving the need for constant harvesting.  Plus the worms help aerate the garden soil and reproduce to create a sustainable garden environment.

Worms Included

Yes. We include 300-400 composting worms with our standard In-Garden Worm Composting Kit. We provide pure Red Wigglers (Eisenia fetida) as they are the proven Arizona composting worm and are better suited for our warm temperatures. Most vendors do not include worms with composting kits, which greatly adds to the setup time and cost.

What to feed worms?

In general, a mixture of green material (such as fruit and vegetable scraps) and brown material (things that were a tree), should be provided to the worms weekly or when the previously fed green material is consumed. The green and brown amounts should be roughly equal.

The exact quantity of material depends on the number of worms and current weather, with a good rule being 1 cup of each material for every 300 worms. It is better to feed too little than too much.

Periodically worm chow is provided to supplement nutrients and grit to the worms.

Green Material

  • Vegetables
  • Fruits (avoid tomatoes and citrus)
  • Coffee grounds and filters (preferably unbleached)
  • Tea bags
  • Crushed Egg shells (thoroughly washed and dried)

Brown Material

  • Shredded Cardboard
  • Newspaper (avoid glossy and colored paper)
  • Dried leaves

No.  Worms only ingest decomposing materials and will not eat live plants.

The following items should be avoided when feeding worms as they may harm the worms or create an unpleasant environment.

  • Meats and Cheeses
  • Spicy foods
  • Oily foods
  • Onions
  • Diseased Plants
  • Dairy Products
  • Lawn products treated with pesticides

Right away.  To make this possible we pre-hydrate the appropriate kit materials with dechlorinated water and provide a biologically active premium soil starter base so the worms have a good environment on day one.  If you cannot install your kit right away, please let us know so we can make other arrangements and ensure a positive experience for you and the worms.

No.  Worm castings are odor-free and unlike other types of composting, there is no smell.  If any unpleasant scents exist, it likely due to overfeeding materials that breakdown slowly.  Please contact us for guidance as necessary.
